It's Okay If You Aren't Close to Your Sibling

From the.holistic.psychologist
There's nothing wrong with you if you aren't close to your sibling.
We have the idea that everyone should be.
Here's Why That's Unrealistic:

As a society, we have the idea that our siblings are built-in best friends. But for many reasons sometimes there isn't a true bond or connection with our siblings.

This can be because:

  • You were abused by your sibling (more common than we talk about
  • You were raised in a dysfunctional home where you were forced to compete for love or affection
  • You didn't share the same interests or didn't understand each other
  • There was a large age gap
  • You both spent a lot of time away from your home growing up
  • Your parents separated and you had different living arrangements

For many reasons, you might have unresolved hurt. Or even pain when seeing a sibling. It can bring back all the hard memories of childhood.
Or, you both might feel completely neutral to each other. With guilt over the reality that you just don't feel that bond.

It's a beautiful thing when siblings develop a close, healthy relationship.
But sometimes it's just not possible. And distance or boundaries are the most healthy responses.

These boundaries are especially important if there's addiction or abuse. "Blood is thicker than water" does not mean we tolerate abuse from family members.

Whatever relationship you have with your sibling, know there is no type of relationship you're "supposed" to have.

Pressure from parents to be close or from people who have a close
relationship with their own sibling just shows how people don't understand that relationships are built on much more than just growing up together.

Do YOU have a close relationship with your siblings?
Do people around you
"get" the relationship?
Let's talk about it in the comments...
