The question
We are frequently advised: “Ask Allah for ʿāfiyah, not for ṣabr.” There is wisdom behind this advice, but only when it is understood in its proper place.
The Prophet ﷺ taught us not to wish for trials. When Allah has kept us safe, we should never imagine ourselves strong enough to face calamity. We should repeatedly and sincerely ask Him for العافية, ʿāfiyah.
But what happens when the calamity has already arrived?
The loss has happened. The illness has begun. The debt exists. The relationship has broken. The uncertainty has continued for months, perhaps years.
The person is no longer discussing a hypothetical trial. He is already inside it.
