Beneath temperament lies something subtler still, and it deserves its own chapter because it is the quietest danger in the religious life. We may become attached not to Allah, but to our preferred way of worshipping Allah. One person loves dhikr, another loves recitation, another fasting, another Hajj and Umrah, another charity, another religious travel, another teaching, another da’wah, another serving people, another solitude, another study. All of these loves can be beautiful, and in their beginnings they usually are. The trouble starts when the love of the form grows roots of its own.
